Head Driver / Mechanic
Department: Transport & Fleet Operations
Reports To: Operations/Fleet Manager
Supervises: Drivers
Employment Type: Full-Time
Job Purpose
The Head Driver/Mechanic will be responsible for supervising the Company's drivers and supporting the safe, efficient and reliable operation of the Company's trucks, horses and trailers. The successful candidate will also provide basic mechanical support and on-road breakdown assistance, while ensuring that major mechanical problems are promptly escalated to management or qualified mechanics.
Qualifications & Experience
Grade 12 Certificate.
Valid Class C or CE driver's license for heavy vehicles.
Relevant HGV qualification where applicable.
Certificate in Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Heavy Equipment Mechanics or related technical field.
3-5 years experience as a heavy duty truck driver.
Proven experience with trucks, horses and trailers.
Previous driver-supervisory experience will be an advantage.
Experience in long-distance logistics is highly desirable.

Knowledge of:
- Heavy-duty trucks & horse/trailer combinations.
- Diesel engines and cooling systems.
- Air brake and braking systems.
- Clutch, gearbox and drive train.
- Electrical and lighting faults.
- Suspension systems.

Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate company drivers.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of trucks, horses and trailers.
- Ensure compliance with truck safety and company policies.
- Provide roadside assistance and emergency support.
- Monitor driver performance, attendance and discipline.
- Support daily transport operations and vehicle dispatch.
- Ensure company vehicles are maintained in roadworthy condition.
- Maintain accurate breakdowns and repair records.
