About the Role:

Underwriting and Product Development Manager Jobs in Lusaka Reporting directly to the Chief Technical Operations Officer, the successful candidate will provide strategic leadership and technical oversight across underwriting and insurance product development functions.

The role demands a focus on sound risk selection, pricing discipline, and innovative product design to drive sustainable growth and regulatory adherence.

Key Responsibilities Underwriting Strategy and Governance:

  • Develop, implement, and regularly review underwriting strategies, policies, and governance frameworks.
  • Ensure consistent application of underwriting standards, authority limits, and pricing guidelines.
  • Provide leadership and technical guidance to underwriting teams, including approval of complex and high-value risks within delegated authority.

Product Development and Innovation:

  • Lead the creation, development, and refinement of insurance products.
  • Conduct market research and customer analysis to inform product innovation.
  • Collaborate with actuarial, reinsurance, claims, and business development teams to ensure products are both commercially viable and technically sound.
  • Oversee pricing, policy wording, endorsements, and product approval processes.

Portfolio Performance Management:

  • Monitor portfolio performance metrics such as premium growth, loss ratios, claims trends, and profitability.
  • Identify adverse trends and recommend corrective measures.
  • Manage accumulation control, exposure, and portfolio diversification.
  • Prepare performance reports for underwriting and product lines.

Reinsurance and Capacity Management:

  • Coordinate closely with the Reinsurance Unit to align underwriting strategies with reinsurance capacity and structures.
  • Provide technical input on reinsurance program design and treaty negotiations.
  • Ensure underwriting decisions comply with reinsurance arrangements and retention limits.

Business Development and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Offer technical underwriting and product support to Business Development, Corporate, SME, Retail, and Branch teams.
  • Engage with key clients, brokers, and stakeholders.
  • Advise senior management on underwriting capacity, product positioning, and emerging market opportunities.

Compliance, Risk Management, and Governance:

  • Ensure all underwriting and product development activities comply with applicable insurance regulations, corporate governance standards, and internal policies.
  • Oversee the maintenance and periodic review of underwriting manuals, guidelines, and authority frameworks.
  • Support audits, regulatory inspections, and compliance reviews.
  • Embed effective risk management controls within underwriting and product processes.
  • Qualifications and Experience Grade 12 Certificate.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Insurance, Actuarial Science, Business Administration, Finance, Risk Management, or related field.
  • ZAQA certified qualifications are required.
  • A minimum of six years’ relevant experience in underwriting and product development.
  • Technical Skills and Competencies Comprehensive knowledge of general insurance underwriting principles and product structures.
  • Strong expertise in product development, pricing, and policy wording.
  • Sound understanding of reinsurance, capacity management, and portfolio optimization.
  • Excellent analytical, financial, and risk assessment skills.
  • Proven leadership ability with strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret and ensure compliance with insurance regulations.
  • Proficiency in insurance systems, underwriting tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
