About the Role – Senior Metallurgist Comminution Jobs in Kalumbila Reporting to the Superintendent Technical within the Processing Technical team, the Senior Metallurgist Comminution will be the technical owner of the comminution section.
This role is responsible for defining, implementing, monitoring, and reporting on the comminution plant process strategy to maximise metallurgical performance. Key focus areas include daily to monthly optimisation of throughput, energy efficiency, grind size targets, and minimising wear and media consumption.
Key Responsibilities Ensure compliance with legal appointments under Zambian Mining Regulations. Maximise throughput and optimise energy use to achieve target grind sizes for downstream sulphide flotation.
Manage crusher and mill liners, grinding media consumption, and power efficiency. Maintain high Health, Safety, Environment, and Community (SHEC) standards and promptly address all incidents.
Define and implement the comminution metallurgical process strategy, consistently exceeding KPIs such as OPEX, particle size distribution, crusher CSS optimisation, and cyclone cluster performance. Provide technical support to operations personnel through active participation in daily and weekly plant activities.
Conduct detailed data analysis and troubleshooting using PI Vision and other process control systems. Coordinate milling surveys, plant trials, and metallurgical test work to improve circuit performance.
Document and maintain comprehensive databases of plant trials and critical metallurgical parameters. Lead the commissioning of new projects and review plant design for capital upgrade justification.
Collaborate with process control engineers to define and maintain comminution control philosophies and expert systems. Supervise and mentor subordinate staff, fostering skill development and technical knowledge transfer.
Manage cost-effective decision-making and ensure strong integration between processing and mining teams. Candidate Profile and Attributes Minimum of 5 years’ experience in large-scale metallurgical process operations, particularly comminution circuits.
Proven expertise in base metal crushing and milling (SAG/Ball) within plant technical metallurgist or engineering roles. Experience with process control systems, PI Process Book, and metallurgical optimisation.
Strong leadership and motivational skills with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across disciplines. Excellent analytical skills to identify process bottlenecks and implement effective solutions.
Ability to communicate clearly and produce accurate operational performance reports. Commitment to SHEC principles and ability to maintain composure under pressure.
Fluent in English and capable of working effectively in a multicultural environment. Computer literate with proficiency in relevant software tools.
Qualifications Grade 12 Certificate. Degree in Chemical Engineering, Extractive Metallurgy, Mineral Processing, or a related field.
Eligibility for membership in the Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ) and ability to hold the required legal appointment under Zambian Mining Regulations. All academic qualifications must be validated by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).
