Role Overview – Projects Geotechnical Engineer Jobs in Kalumbila Reporting directly to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, the successful candidate will lead junior geotechnical engineers in comprehensive geotechnical activities.
Responsibilities span from field data collection to advanced technical analysis, including supervision of drilling programs, core and soil logging, televiewer survey oversight, rock mass characterization, structural data interpretation, geotechnical block modelling, and slope stability assessments.
Key Responsibilities Supervise geotechnical investigation drilling programs ensuring high-quality core recovery with precise orientation markings aligned with project standards. Prepare drilling sites in advance, ensuring all requirements are met for smooth operations.
Conduct lithological and structural logging of geological and geotechnical exploration holes both on-site and in the core shed. Secure and transport core samples properly for storage or further processing.
Perform point load testing on core samples, adhering strictly to test protocols and accurate data recording. Select and preserve core samples for rock strength testing, coordinating shipment to laboratories.
Enter geotechnical logging data accurately and promptly into the project database, maintaining data integrity and compliance. Conduct regular validation and quality assurance checks on logged data to resolve inconsistencies.
Maintain organized records of field data, test results, sample registers, and drilling reports. Enhance geotechnical expertise through continuous learning and mentorship under the Geotechnical Coordinator.
Characterize rock masses using geotechnical indices such as RQD, RMR, Q-system, and GSI. Analyze structural data using Dips software for stereonet analysis, failure assessments, and structural domain identification.
Develop and update geotechnical block models integrating logging data, lab results, and structural interpretations to support mine design and planning. Contribute to slope stability assessments and build stability models, offering sound geotechnical recommendations.
Assist in preparing geotechnical reports, data summaries, and technical memoranda throughout project phases. Mentor junior geotechnical engineers, fostering professional growth and knowledge sharing.
Candidate Requirements Full Grade 12 School Certificate. Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or Geology.
Minimum of four years’ experience within the mining industry. Proven expertise in geology or geotechnical logging.
Proficient computer skills, including integrated management systems, word processing, presentations, and spreadsheets. Strong communication, leadership, and safety management capabilities.
